Supermarket Shelf Layout and Design

Jun 26 , 2025

It is very important to use shelves effectively to display merchandise in stores, maximize the value of individual products and make adjustments based on actual conditions.

1. Low-profit goods should be displayed on the bottom shelf. Necessary or low-profit goods should be displayed on the bottom shelf, and high-profit, fast-turnover, big-brand, high-priced goods should be displayed in the prime position of the shelf. Other goods of the same category, specification and price should not be purchased in large quantities, otherwise the goods in the store will compete with each other.

2. Fresh produce should be displayed in important locations. Fresh produce mainly refers to fruits, vegetables, and fresh meat, which are usually placed inside the front door of the supermarket. Sometimes they can also be placed in the center of the secondary aisle, but such placement generally requires a larger store area.

3. Condiment wall display. After the fresh food area is planned, the condiment area in the food area is basically fixed. It is usually placed on the wall shelf closest to the fresh food area. Because the wall shelves are relatively high, it is best if a row of shelves can be filled with condiments. Customers will see the condiment shelf when buying vegetables, so they can buy all the condiments they need at one time and go directly to the checkout counter to check out.

4. Bulk food is displayed in a variety of ways. Bulk food is usually placed next to the fresh food area because it also needs to be weighed. Bulk snacks should be displayed on special shelves as much as possible, such as in small plastic baskets, to improve shelf utilization.

5. Homemade food display. Homemade food is usually placed in the cashier area, mainly on the cashier counter, or behind the cash register counter. Common homemade foods include oden, grilled sausages, steamed buns, boxed lunches, various homemade drinks, etc.

6. Tobacco and alcohol should be placed on the counter near the cashier area. High-end wines such as fine wine, red wine and foreign wine are generally placed in the wine cabinet near the cashier. Bottled liquor is placed on the shelf, small bottles are placed on the top, the largest bottles are placed on the bottom, and the most common specifications are placed in the middle. Cheap red wine is generally placed on the top of the wine shelf, beer in glass bottles is placed at the bottom, and other cocktails and small wines are displayed vertically according to taste.

7. There must be a special display area. Special or imported goods need to be placed in a special area, such as halal food placed separately and imported food placed separately. As a special area, the location of the special display area shelf must be obvious.

In this intelligent era, many products are designed to save time and effort, allowing supermarkets or convenience stores to spend less time on the best merchandising. For example, our Roller sliding shelf system and partitions that make merchandise more neat and beautiful.
